Roku Ramen + Sushi

There’s a new Japanese restaurant that opened in the Oracle Building on Katipunan last October 8. Fortunately, we are one of those couples who’s always up for Japanese, so we decided to try it out on a lazy Saturday afternoon.

Roku Ramen & Sushi is found on the 5th floor of the Oracle Building on Katipunan Ave., the same place where you find Serenitea and Chicken Charlie. As soon as you step inside, you instantly feel the cozy vibe from the darling interiors. Odin, who’s a flaming fan of Japanese culture and design, was more than delighted to start eating.

For us, a dinner date at a Japanese resto is as pointless as Shaq at the freethrow line if we don’t have any raw fish, so for starters, we ordered our usual spicy salmon rolls, or as Roku calls it, Firecracker Rolls. Considering we practically inhaled all eight rolls pretty fast, I’d say they passed our standards.

A special HOLLA to these babies, the Jalapeño Poppers – salmon and cream cheese wrapped in Jalapeño pepper. It had this special honey-mustard-ish type of sauce that complemented the rolls’ taste perfectly. Not as spicy as we hoped, but add a little extra wasabi on them and it’s just right! Definitely a must-try.

We have this thing with Japanese restos where we judge them by ordering our usuals. (Of course, we don’t do this all the time. We like to try different things too.) At Roku, we had the Yakitori (chicken skewers), Beef Ramen, and the Chicken Teriyaki. Savory, flavorful and tender – needless to say, we loved all of them.

Now THIS is the most special one. I would honestly go to Roku just for this. Funny thing is that I almost didn’t eat this because I was already so full, but thankfully, Odin forced me to try it. Apple Pie Gyoza – isn’t that the most heavenly thing you’ve ever heard? I normally don’t eat apple pie because I have this bias that my mother makes the best, but this wonderful creation comes close. Five little pastry dumplings served warm with vanilla ice cream. My mouth is watering just remembering it.

Overall, I’m comfortable to declare Roku is as the most decent Japanese resto on Katipunan Ave. (now that Kamirori’s food quality has sadly been declining). Reasonable prices and warm staff service made it even better. If you guys want to eat here, their current operating hours are from 3PM to 12MN.
